I named this series “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” as a nod to the 1967 film starring Julie Andrews, but mainly because many of the collage works feature my great grandmother whose name was Millie. I never met my great grandma Millie, but spent a lot of time going through old family photos and “modernizing” them. These collages begin with a photo of a family member taken 50-80 years ago (my mom as a child, her parents on their wedding day, their parents, etc) I then sift through my own photographs on my phone, and through magazines and combine imagery found there to create surrealist collages. I think of these collages as a way of connecting with the past and also as a way of bringing the past to the present
